At the start of her voyage to Australia, this wooden sailing barque left London in December 1852 carrying cargo and imigrants. The imigrands were poor and desperate and keen to find a better life in the gold fields of Australia. The cargo contained fire bricks and other valuable items!
Off the Devon coast she encountered a storm and was forced to find shelter in Torbay. However, her anchors would not hold in the worsening conditions and she driftes accross the bay where she hit rocks and her rudder was ripped off and she was holed. She was lifted off the rocks by the swell and began to drift again, helpless, into Lyme Bay... |
