Swyre Ledges

Depth 22-26m, flat sand and gravel off the reef

This reef and outcrops of rock is approximately 0.75 miles wide and runs eastwards to Chesil Beach. The reef dips below sand and gravel in places so does not run as a continuous stretch. The area of the reef out from Abbottsbury is a good ground for crab and lobsters and is often potted and fished by boats out of West Bay. Scallops can also be found on the flat ground between the reefs.

Tidal streams can run quite fast here during springs, up to 1.5 knots at times.
